settings for crime films

settings

a lot of crime films are set in New York, especially films about the mafia these films include:

  • The Godfather
  • Goodfellas
  • Taxi driver
  • the usual suspects
the scene is usually in the dark back streets of the city, in order to run an underground operation of sorts. It is usually in an area of low lighting, creating a dark, stingy effect which creates a dark, cold atmosphere

British crime films are mainly set in a run down area of London, or a different British city. these films include:
  • snatch
  • lock stock and two smoking barrels
  • trainspotting
  • the Krays
  • the Sweeney
in british come films, the focus is mainly on the poorer, more disadvantaged side of society, like council estates and generally poorer people who live in run down areas of the UK, for example, in trainspotting, the main characters are all heroin addicts sharing a very bare apartment, with no furniture, and in snatch, some of the focus in on a gypsy camp, which is generally seen as a dirty old caravan site, with little hygiene.
the main difference is that the american based films are set on a wealthy crime family, who are generally well dressed, and in British films, it is centred around the disadvantaged side of the population, turning to crime to make a living.
