Most crime films are all
very similar to each other, typically the plot may be different, but will
contain similar conventions.
Some similar films are:
- Goodfellas
A
story about three gangsters, and there lives up to becoming wealthy
individuals, associated with their own gang. They commit crimes for money. The
plot of the story is a build up throughout their lives for it to only come
crashing down on them. It gained very positive reviews in the box office,
receiving a 88% review from Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.7 from IMDb.
- Scarface
Another gang film that has a similar plot to Goodfellas in which is revolves a story loosely based on the rise of Al Capone into the criminal world as he started from nothing. The film gained quite negative reviews, specifically because of its extensive use of violence and strong language. Despite this, Rotten Tomatoes still gave the film 88%.
- The Godfather
Another
similar story plot to the previous two films, in which it shows two family
members upcoming into a New York
crime family, the film spanning over the period 1945-1955. The film was a box
office success, breaking many records into gaining money profit of £275 million,
as well as this, it gained nothing but positive reviews, accumulating a score
of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and even being called the “The Best Film Ever”.
- Pulp Fiction
A
plot that is split up into three main parts in a non linear story line, feature
the lives of Mob hitman, a prize-fighter, and another Mob hitman. They all
intersect someway, but they are all based on criminal lifestyles, and their
lives. It was positively reviewed on the basis of the well written storyline,
and the way it worked, gaining a 96% review off of Rotten Tomatoes.
- The Silence of the Lambs
Even
though the film classed as a thriller with horror aspects, it also has a very
large crime aspect, due to the investigation of “Buffalo Bill”, using Hannibal
Lector’s help to do this. While the plot of the film is about the investigation
into the murders, it also has a sort of side story about the Detective’s life.
The film was only the third other film at the time to win the big five Academy
Awards, receiving largely positive reviews specifically about the plot.
